Mapping the recession (2)

7 November 2008

By Paul Miller

We’ve released www.recessionmap.co.uk .  It was given publicity in Regeneration and Renewal this morning.

Recession Map contains three data sets – two of which are not available in G-View. House prices from the Land Registry (the latest data – to end July) which enables users to identify where prices are falling, by how much and house type across England and Wales.

G-View

And importantly, we’ve estimated the impact on jobs of the recession.  We’ve done that by Local Authority District and by sector in those Districts.

The greatest percentage job losses are found in places like Thurrock in Essex, Dartford in Kent, and Eastleigh in Hampshire. While  a preponderance of Financial Services employers brings obvious job loss in the City of London, Westminster and Tower Hamlets, they also brings considerable job loss to Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol.

Using the latest GDP figures, we estimate that job losses will be 176,000 with the biggest impact from the recession felt from the downturn in Distribution and hotels and restaurants. Liverpool, Sheffield and Bradford are particularly badly hit in his sector.

One place that is hit across most sectors, is Camden in North London.  This London Borough is badly hit by the downturn in financial services, distribution and transportation.  However, in a sign that shows either that residents will not suffer as much, or that things haven’t quite caught up, Camden is also the place that enjoyed the greatest house price INCREASE in the three months to July (according to the latest Land Registry data).

If you have never used G-View, then I do recommend that you look at the tutorial called "G-View the Basics"
