Workless places differ

In particular, the relationship between the number of BUSINESSES and the number of WORKLESS can be very different.

There are two ways to review the worklessness problem across England and Wales. Firstly, you may interact with the relationship of businesses to the workless on a map .  The map permits drill down to MSOA.

Worklessness and Business is a presentation which discusses the four groups of places we identify above in considerable detail. You can see how the regional distribution of places varies and learn more about the nature of the worklessness challenge in your place.

We distinguish four groups of places:

  1. MANY BUSINESSES and MANY CLAIMANTS.  Challenging but potential to match the workless and busineses close by.
  2. MANY BUSINESSES and FEW CLAIMANTS. Worklessness in these places should be the easiest to solve.
  3. FEW BUSINESSES and MANY CLAIMANTS.  These places represent the greatest challenge.
  4. FEW BUSINESSES and FEW CLAIMANTS.  The majority of places are like this - but the variation is considerable.

The appropriate geographical unit of analysis to think about the worklessness problem is Middle Super Output Area. This is an area across which we might expect claimants to travel to work and which could house a reasonable population of businesses.
